Miscellaneous metals is the one trade where the specification section is the least reliable place to find the scope. Stairs, railings and the named fabrications in Division 05 50 are real and countable — but the bulk of the long tail this trade actually prices is scattered one item at a time across every other discipline's drawings: a corner guard called out in a hallway detail, an elevator pit ladder on the elevator shop drawing, a sill angle on an architectural section. Nobody collects these into one list for you. That's the job.

This is a working list of where misc metals scope actually gets decided, built from what shows up across real Canadian ICI tenders. Not a fabrication catalogue — a list of the specific sweeps and boundary clauses worth running before the number leaves the office.

What's reliably yours

  • Metal fabrications, complete — loose angles, bent plates, bollards, corner guards, cat ladders, gratings, checkered plate, elevator pit ladders and sill angles. This is the long tail the drawings scatter, and it's counted item by item, not swept up in a single allowance.
  • Metal stairs and railings — steel stairs with pan or grating treads, handrails and guards, wall rails, supplied and installed with the shop finish as specified.
  • Delegated connection and guard design — engineering and stamped shop drawings for stairs, guards and ladders where the documents delegate that design to the fabricator. This is a real engineering cost, not a formality; extract the delegation language rather than assuming it's covered elsewhere.
  • Loose lintels and shelf angles, supply — where the documents assign supply to metals. Extract the assignment either way it lands, because masonry installs these but someone still has to supply them, and silence in the spec doesn't mean nobody's on the hook.

Where the fight actually happens

Ornamental and architectural metals

Feature stairs, glass or cable railings and architectural screens read like an upgrade to standard metal fabrications, but they're really a different pricing category entirely — the finish system attached to them (polished stainless, a custom powder coat, a proprietary cable system) drives the cost far more than the steel tonnage does. Extract these with the finish system named specifically, not just flagged as "feature item."

Crane-adjacent steel

Runway stops, crane rail fixings and davit bases sit in the gap between the crane or hoist vendor's package and the general steel scope, and specs don't reliably assign them to either by default. Where the crane vendor's scope doesn't explicitly claim this steel, it needs a name on it before bid day — this is exactly the kind of item that gets discovered when the crane installer shows up and asks who's supplying the rail stops.

Guide angles and jamb steel at specialty doors

Overhead and coiling doors need guide angles, jamb steel and hood supports, and this is a genuine no-man's-land: the door supplier is watching for this steel to already be there, and the misc metals package doesn't automatically price it just because it's steel. Extract the assignment explicitly — neither package prices this by default, which means silence here is the single most likely way it gets missed entirely.

The other half: what isn't yours, even when it looks close

  • Structural steel frame, joists and deck — the building frame belongs to the structural steel trade. Worth recording frame items at note anyway, since the boundary between "structural" and "miscellaneous" is exactly where a scope gap tends to open.
  • Cold-formed framing and stud walls — this is drywall's scope even when the word "metal" appears right in the note. It's the most common false-positive in the whole trade: a spec reviewer sees "metal" and assumes misc metals, and it's wrong every time.

Four things that hide on someone else's drawings

  • Galvanizing and finish assignments. Hot-dip galvanized versus primed versus powder-coated is a real cost spread, and exterior items default to galvanized in most specs without the schedule bothering to repeat it on every item — assume galvanized outdoors unless told otherwise.
  • Embeds and anchor bolts split. Supply by metals, placement by concrete is the usual split, but "usual" isn't good enough here — extract the actual words. A missed embed isn't a paperwork problem; it's a site-drilled fix at cost, after the pour.
  • Code-driven guard requirements. Guard heights and loads are frequently pulled from code by reference rather than drawn explicitly, and the delegated engineer prices to the code minimum regardless of what the drawing shows — which means the drawing alone can understate what's actually required.
  • Scattered fabrication notes, generally. Misc metals hides on every discipline's details — a bollard on civil, a ladder on mechanical, a lintel on architectural. There's no substitute for sweeping every sheet in the set; a section-by-section read of Division 05 50 alone will miss most of this trade's actual scope.

Treat Division 05 50 as the starting point, not the finish line — then sweep the civil, architectural, mechanical, electrical and elevator sheets specifically for loose steel that never made it into a schedule. Confirm every embed, lintel and guide-angle assignment in the actual document language rather than the usual split, and assume galvanized outdoors until told otherwise. The spec section names the categories; the drawings scattered across every other discipline are where this trade's real quantity actually lives.
