How this stacks up against what you're doing now.

Most of our competition isn't software — it's a highlighter, a spreadsheet and a long weekend. Here's an honest read on all three options.

Tender Helper
web app · CAD · Canadian ICI
Spreadsheet & PDF markup
Excel + Bluebeam + highlighter
Takeoff suite
Bluebeam, PlanSwift, STACK, On-Screen Takeoff
Time to first scope list
900-page manual
Under an hour, then your review pass One to three days of reading Same reading — the suite helps with quantities, not clauses
Traceability
“where does it say that?”
Document, page and CSI section on every item; one click to the page Whatever the estimator remembered to note in a cell Links to drawings, rarely to spec clauses
Addenda handling Scanned in full, matched to the item amended, flagged for your decision Manual re-read of everything, every round Usually a document attachment; no clause-level diff
Cost of entry Per seat, monthly, CAD. Cancel any time Licences you already own — paid for in estimator hours instead Five figures per seat, annual commitment, paid implementation
Time to competence An afternoon. It's a tender, documents, a scope list Zero — everyone already knows it, which is the real reason it survives Weeks of training; often one power user carries the shop
Canadian-market fit CSA references, metric/imperial mixed specs, CAD billing, data in Canada, EN/FR As Canadian as the person filling it in US-first assemblies and pricing databases; USD billing common
Who to call when it's wrong The estimator who built it Yourself, at 11pm A ticket queue in another time zone

The takeoff-suite column reflects the category — every named tool measures drawings and marks up PDFs; none reads the specification. For named prices and where each one specifically falls short, see the full buyer's guide →.

Where we'd tell you not to bother

You bid residential

The division indexing, MasterFormat sections and addenda logic all assume ICI documents. On a spec home you'd be fighting the tool.

You need a full ERP

No payroll, no accounting, no project management after award. This is the bid period, done well, and nothing else.

You want it to price the job

It finds and cites the scope. Your unit rates, your judgement, your number — a tool that guesses those isn't one you should trust.
