Rough carpentry reads like the most concrete trade on the tender — member sizes, spacing and sheathing thicknesses are all sitting right there on the structural drawings, and a competent takeoff off those sheets gets most of a bid built. Where rough carpentry bids actually go sideways is in the scatter: backing and blocking called up one line at a time inside somebody else's section, treatment requirements buried in a general note, and the design-delegation split on engineered systems that varies from tender to tender.

This is a working list of where that scatter actually lands, built from what shows up across real Canadian ICI tenders — not a lumber species reference, a list of the specific items worth chasing down before the number leaves the office.

What's reliably yours

  • Wood framing complete — walls, floors and roofs per the structural plans: member sizes, spacing, engineered lumber, beams and posts, and every multi-ply connection the framing schedule calls for. This is the part of the bid with the clearest documentation and the least ambiguity.
  • Sheathing — roof and wall sheathing types, thicknesses and nailing patterns. The shearwall schedule's nailing requirement is a genuine labour driver that hides on one structural sheet, often stated as an edge-nailing spacing that's easy to read past if you're pricing sheathing by area alone rather than by fastening density.
  • Blocking, backing and nailers — roof nailers and curbs, parapet blocking, and backing for grab bars, casework, TV mounts and handrails. This is the classic scatter item: every discipline's details call some of it up, and no single schedule gathers the full list in one place.
  • Rough hardware — hangers, straps, hold-downs and anchor systems per the schedules and general notes. Priced by count and type, not guessed at — the connection schedule is as real a takeoff document as the framing plan.
  • Plywood backboards — electrical and communications backboards. Small individually, always specified somewhere, and consistently argued about when nobody has explicitly claimed the line.

Where the fight actually happens

Wood trusses and engineered floor systems

Supplier-designed trusses and engineered floor systems shift design responsibility to a truss manufacturer's engineer rather than the project's structural engineer of record, and the bearing requirements that come out of that delegated design aren't always fully coordinated with the framing drawings you're pricing from. The supply route itself varies too — sometimes the truss package comes through the rough carpentry sub, sometimes it's a direct owner or GC purchase with rough carpentry only installing. Confirm both the design-delegation responsibility and the supply route before pricing a truss package as a simple material-and-install line.

Heavy timber and mass timber

Glulam, CLT and exposed timber carry a cost driver that standard dimensional framing doesn't: appearance grade. An architectural-grade exposed glulam beam with a specified finish is a materially different price than an industrial-grade beam hidden above a ceiling, even at identical dimensions — and the grade requirement is frequently stated once, in a general note, rather than repeated on every beam callout. Extract the finish and appearance grade alongside the structural size, because pricing mass timber off dimensions alone misses the number that actually matters here.

The other half: what isn't yours, even when it looks close

  • Finish carpentry and millwork — trim, casework and architectural woodwork belong to the millwork trade, not rough carpentry, even though both trades are cutting wood on the same site. The boundary is functional, not material: rough carpentry frames and blocks, millwork finishes and installs cabinetry.
  • Siding and exterior cladding — the cladding trade's scope even when the material is wood. A wood rainscreen or board siding system reads like carpentry, but it's priced, warrantied and installed as cladding, and treating it as a rough carpentry line item is a common and costly misread.

Three things that hide outside the structural drawings

  • Treatment requirements. Preservative and fire-retardant treatment assignments — which items require it, and what certification is asked for — are frequently stated as a general note rather than flagged on individual framing members. Treated lumber costs more and installs differently at connections; missing the requirement on sill plates or exterior-exposed framing is a common and avoidable gap.
  • Backing for other trades. The phrase "blocking by Division 6" appears inside mechanical, electrical and specialties sections far more often than it appears as a consolidated list anywhere in the carpentry section itself. Each instance is individually small — a grab bar here, a fire extinguisher cabinet there — but across a full building they add up to real, easily under-counted material and labour.
  • Moisture and storage requirements. Moisture content limits on framing lumber, plus site storage and protection obligations before it's enclosed, carry real schedule and handling cost on a project with any exposure period — and they're a Division 01-adjacent requirement that's easy to treat as boilerplate rather than a genuine site-logistics cost.

The pass that catches most of this

Take the structural drawings off completely first — that part of the bid is genuinely well-documented. Then go looking specifically for the word "blocking" and the phrase "by others" across the mechanical, electrical and specialties sections, because that's where the backing scatter actually lives, not in a single consolidated schedule. The framing plan gets you most of the way to a number; the scattered backing callouts and the treatment and grade notes buried in general requirements are what turn that number into one that doesn't get disputed at rough-in.
